First race of the season, first long distance (1.9km swim, 90km ride, 21.1km run), and it was all good fun! I was reminded of the usual chaotic swim start with pushes, scratches, kicks in the face and several mouthful of water. After a battle in the choppy water, it was time to get on the bike and face some wind. I was happy with my choice of gels, the chocolate flavour worked a treat! The run felt like a long agony but what else to expect, it's an endurance event and no matter how fit you are, we all feel the same at that point. It's a battle of the mind and body not to crack. Add to that an amazing weather, so we all cooked up nicely running around midday. I have so many tan lines now that you would struggle to spot me among zebras. The best part was running the last couple of kilometers and hearing the commentator. I knew that the finish line was close and couldn't wait to get there and celebrate! I'm very happy with my time on the line, 5h12:26, and also that I learned some good lessons along the way.
Altogether, I enjoyed the course, it was well organised, I found that the drink tables were well placed along the course and there was a great choice of beverages between the water, the electrolyte and the coke, I had them all! It was fun to see friends again, especially Sarah Crowley, now a Pro triathlete living in Queensland. We used to train together in the Meteors club in South Australia...some 10 years ago! This was the first time we caught up face to face since then. The post-race refreshments were great, I had an awesome massage which fixed me up nicely and, as a Hammer Nutrition ambassador, I was happy to hand over some prizes during the award presentation. Certainly a very positive experience and much enjoyment, a definite race in my calendar next year!
