I did my first marathon last weekend (20 August 2017) and it went very well, I didn't hit the wall and was in control the whole time. Uphills and strong winds made it for a tough race. By 35-37km I had several people in sight, among them runners and triathletes I knew. I felt I had another gear in me so decided to raise the tempo to try and catch them. I put myself in the hurt locker, produced a 4:30-4:35 pace and caught them up one by one, even finished the event by sprinting to pass one more person just before the line, ah! I decided before the race to carry my own nutrition and hydration, and not rely on the on-course supply. I was very happy with this choice as I believe it made a difference. Overall, 40th place out of 324 participants in a time of 3h20:45. All in all, a great day out, I went beyond my expectations, and had fun with everyone around.
